This month’s speaker will be none other than our favorite bookseller—Book Passage co-owner and debut novelist, Bill Petrocelli. We have Bill and Elaine Petrocelli to thank for a welcoming venue and a keen dedication to books and the people who write them, especially the writers in our community.

Bill’s new novel, The Circle of Thirteen, is set in a future in which a misogynistic terrorist organization called Patria carries out relentless and vicious attacks on women. We’re celebrating some of our LCW poets, including Marianne Betterly and her latest publication in Between the Fault Lines, which grew out of a group of eight poets living east of the San Francisco Bay who inhabit a land fraught with faults. Fortunately, Bay Area poets are not easily shaken by occasional tremblers. Living on the edge can, in fact, stimulate the creative process. Crisscrossing the hills to discover whether or not their poems communicated, these poets strengthened their individual voices and produced an amazing set of rich and diverse poems. (more…)

The Whale Song Translation is a story about sound—sounds of language, sounds of songs, and the sounds that kill . . .

When the Navy’s controversial sonar experiments begin to destroy Maui’s whales, an unlikely hero emerges. Inspired by his mentor’s paradigm-busting challenge to open a communications channel with other big-brained species, acoustics professor David Dmitri begins analyzing the songs of humpback whales. The quest to decode their mysterious language leads him to an astonishing revelation. With more proof, Dmitri realizes he could rally public opinion and stanch the bloodshed. But as his team prepares to launch a voyage of discovery in the Straits of Lahaina, others are determined to stop him—whatever the consequences.
Come for drinks and snacks and a celebration of sound and story.

Charles Entrekin, Founder of The Berkeley Poets Cooperative (1968-1991) is going to talk about the importance of groups and organizations such as BPW&P. These poets and writers of BPW&P were writing about and living in tumultuous times in Berkeley when universities were under attack and free speech was in question, when the byword of the culture rang out, “Question authority.” It was an amazing period in history; when everything seemed possible. Looking back on times like this and on groups like BPW&P, can help and inspire new groups of poets and writers to maybe show a little of the optimism that sometimes seems lost.  We, at Left Coast Writers, count Charles and The Berkeley Poets Cooperative as one of our major sources of inspiration.
