The story was first published in the Wanderland Writers anthology, Wandering in Cornwall: Mystery, Mirth and Transformation in the Land of Ancient Celts. James A. Jacobs will be giving an Author Talk Sunday, Oct. 30 at 4 p.m. at San Geronimo Valley Community Center regarding his recent historical thriller Days of the Dead. Set in Mexico 1968, the year of the Olympics but also the first and worst government massacre of activist students and their supporters — men, women and children: The Tlatelolco Massacre. Focus will be on elements of memoir (James worked for U.P.I. during that time and witnessed many of the events portrayed in the novel) and themes of ecumenism and diversity, especially as it relates to the main character, Daniel Mendoza, a 28-year-old American journalist who tries, unsuccessfully, to intervene between government forces and activist students intent on shutting down the Olympics as well as reforming government.
While the historical backdrop is the Tlatelolco Massacre, the novel also focuses on Daniel Mendoza’s search for his wife, 8-year-old daughter, and activist nursing student friend who were disappeared after the massacre. A (more…)

Marianne Betterly and other contributors to the Widows’ Handbook: Reflections on Grief and Survival will be reading and speaking on May 31st from 9:30-10:45 a.m. at the First Unitarian Universalist Society of San Francisco.
The Widows’ Handbook is the first anthology of poems by contemporary widows, many of whom have written their way out of solitude and despair, distilling their strongest feelings into poetry or memoir. Left Coast Writer® Barbara Falconer Newhall has recently written a wonderful article about Gary Kamiya and his talk at the October Left Coast Writers® salon. Due to a common writing misstep, Gary Kamiya, a highly experienced writer and editor, found himself with only six months to write a 385-page book.
The San Francisco author and co-founder of Salon.com described his predicament earlier this month to a roomful of authors and author wannabes gathered in the writers room at the back of Book Passage, Marin county’s powerhouse independent bookstore.
It was the first day of Kamiya’s brand new job as executive editor of San Francisco magazine, but he had taken time out to cross the Golden Gate Bridge to read from his new book and to share writing tips with members of the Left Coast Writers salon.
The book was Cool Gray City of Love: 49 Views of San Francisco, which is selling very nicely in the San Francisco Bay Area, thank you, and has received a New York Times review that promises to make his (more…)
Left Coast Writer® Maryly Snow has a great event coming up for California Society of Printmakers: 100 Years, 1913–2013, of which she recently was the editor.
The San Francisco Center for the Book will host, 100 Years in Print: California Society of Printmakers Centennial Celebration. Attendees will have the opportunity to print their own 6-color print commemorating the event. The Center’s exhibition space will display CSP members’ artwork representing etching, woodcut, lithography, mezzotint, silkscreen, and hybrid prints. Thursday, November 7, 6:30-8:30 pm, 375 Rhode Island Street, San Francisco.
The book, California Society of Printmakers: 100 Years, 1913–2013, will be available for purchase at the Oct. 21st Book Club of California event and at the Nov. 7th San Francisco Center for the Book. Essays in the book are by Karin Breuer, Curator in Charge of the Achenbach Foundation for the Graphic Arts, on the relationship between the Achenbach and CSP; Daniel Lienau, owner of The Annex Galleries in Santa Rosa on dealing with early 20th c. fine art prints; Art Hazelwood, artist and curator, on the period of the WPA to the present.
