Wanderland Writers at Laurel Books

Wanderland Writers, Authors of Wandering in Cornwall: Mystery, Mirth, and Transformation in the Land of the Ancient Celts at Laurel Books

Wandering in Cornwall CoverFriday, October 2nd, 2015 || 6pm
Laurel Bookstore || Oakland
1423 Broadway Oakland, CA ||www.laurelbookstore.com

It’s another Wanderland Writers celebration. Wine, snacks, readings, and a brand new book in the series.

This time Wanderland Writers venture deep into Cornwall, exploring it’s castles, its contrast. They find, of course, its legacy of Camelot, the lingering shadows of Arthurian legend, tragic love, magic, and Merlin. They also find its sorrows, buried deep in its history like the now closed mines, where the windswept moors and jagged coasts made everyday events of shipwrecks, isolation, cave-ins. Yet, as workshop leaders Joanna Biggar and Linda Watanabe McFerrin and their fellow travelers discover, that is not the whole story. They also encounter the wonderful and hospitable Cornish, with their enchanting accents, their delightful yarns, their humor, their endurance. They wander, bicycle, hike and kayak to explore hills, waterways, villages and moors in search of the spirit of artists and writers who have come before them to leave an imprint on this untamed land.

Wandering in Cornwall is a beguiling collection of stories and poems about the extreme west of England. Everything that makes Cornwall so special is here: pasties, clotted cream artists, smugglers, the South West Coast Path and even the thieving seagulls. Readers who know Cornwall will be inspired to return and newcomers to this land of myth and legend will vow to see it for themselves.
—Hilary Bradt MBE, Co-founder of Bradt Travel Guides

“Careful, reader. This book is a delight, no doubt about it. But now I have to go to Cornwall.”
—Tim Cahill, Author of Jaguars Ripped My Flesh and Hold the Enlightenment

Writers reading will include: Unity Barry, Daphne Beyers, Antoinette Constable, Tom Harrell, Kitty Hughes, Laurie McAndish King, Ethel Mussen, MJ (more…)

Aristotle called plot “the most important element of storytelling.” But to plot properly, you must have a plan, and the plan must give rise to emotion. Does the plot always seem to elude you? Spend a day planning and plotting and find out what you’re missing. Bring your flat-lining fiction and nonfiction and fix it.

Book Passage || San Francisco
1 Ferry Building, San Francisco ||www.bookpassage.com

He’s back and once again flipping back the tarp on local crime! We are so jazzed to be celebrating true crime writer and Bay Area ex-detective Bill Palmini’s latest book.

In this gripping, true crime exposé, Palmini, a rookie detective, hopes to take down the West Coast Mafia by gaining the confidence of notorious mob operative William Floyd Ettleman. Set against a backdrop of social turmoil, A Rookie Cop vs. The West Coast Mafia immerses readers in the subculture of free love, drugs, robbery and murder, orchestrated by organized crime in locations like the coastal enclave of Sausalito, California.

Artists, writers, musicians, actors and hippies took refuge there. The Trident Restaurant was once a drug Mecca for Hollywood, the music industry and the New York hip. It was co-owned by the Kingston Trio and their manager, Frank Werber, a self-proclaimed drug priest. Robin Williams worked as a busboy there, the Rolling Stones were regulars and Janis Joplin had her own table. Sally Stanford, the former San Francisco Madam who later became Sausalito’s mayor, was a confidant of the famous and infamous. Ettleman’s gang of safecrackers targets the Trident.

Other mobsters like San Diego’s Frank “The Bomp” Bompensiero, on whom Sopranoscharacter “Big Pussy” is thought to have been based, become involved. Palmini, utilizing Ettleman, joins the FBI and the Federal Strike Force on Organized Crime to penetrate the crime scene in Sausalito, loaded dice scams in Las Vegas and Reno, corruption in San Diego and stolen credit cards circulating as far away as Texas. Then he begins to break up one of the most notorious gangs on the West Coast. (more…)

Book Passage-Corte Madera|| 51 Tamal Vista Dr. Corte Madera ||
www.bookpassage.com

Readers, writers, poets and lovers of poetry, we know you’ll enjoy this evening with one of our favorite Left Coast Writers poets.
In Rebecca Foust’s splendid book-length sonnet sequence, Paradise Drive, we come upon a Pilgrim contemplating the deadly sins while hiding out in the bathrooms at some of Marin County, California’s swankiest parties. As the Pilgrim swaggers into an idiosyncratic, believable, frail spirituality, her unmediated, un-medicated new life emerges. The sonnets of this new life are jagged, fresh, and formed in only the way a stunningly skilled poet can craft them. Foust drives her Keatsian sensibility straight into the 21st Century of terrorism and autism, divorce and yoga, soldiers and syringes, booze and valet parking, determined to prove that truth makes beauty. Not only is Paradise Drive a magnificent achievement, it’s a deep comfort as well.
Molly Peacock, author of The Second Blush: Poems

Book Passage-Corte Madera|| 51 Tamal Vista Dr. Corte Madera ||

On Tuesday eve—not Monday eve, due to the holiday weekend—Robbie Scott will talk about the trials and tribulations of taking a self-published book to audio. He’ll cover such topics as recording your own audio, the benefits of working with a professional narrator, and navigating legal and financial issues like contracts and revenue sharing. He’ll  touch on the rise of audiobooks in general, the current players, like audible and iTunes, the self-publishing market, and the plans of independents like Bandcamp. Audiobooks, with a market growth ranging between 6% to almost 50% from year to year, depending who you talk to, are one of the bright spots in book publishing. How will that pan out for the self-publishing crowd?

Robbie Scott is the author of the well-received Mystery of Rascal Pratt, an historical fiction for middle grade readers, set in the Marin Headlands, which has made its way onto summer reading lists and into classrooms  across the states. He finished his second novel, The Queen’s Sceptre, for that same audience early this year and has been working with narrator David Marcus Gibson this spring and summer, preparing its audio version.
He is also a software engineer at Bandcamp, the San Francisco-based music and audio distribution platform, the artist-centric service favored by independent musicians (more…)

Book Passage || San Francisco

In That Thing You Do With Your Mouth:The Sexual Autobiography of Samantha Matthews as told to David Shields, actress and voice-over artist Samantha Matthews offers, in the form of an extended monologue to David Shields, a vivid investigation of her startling sexual history. From her abuse at the hands of a family member to her present day life in Barcelona, Matthews reveals herself to be a darkly funny and contemporary woman with a keen awareness of how her body has been hijacked and the influence of her early trauma. Her story is a study of her uneasy relationships with female desire, her tormentors, and her lovers with whom she has sought out both the infliction and receipt of harm. This book is an attempt to break down barriers both sexual and emotional. For Matthews and Shields, the only response to the unspeakable is to speak, to do that thing you do with your mouth, as directly and honestly as possible. Their provocative performance refuses neat resolution or emotional pornography and will have (more…)
