Audrey Fielding was born in Bristol, Connecticut. For more than twenty years, she was a San Francisco educator. She began studying Italian in Perugia, Italy in 1992. In 2003 on her way to work as an educational consultant in Namibia, she met, by chance, an Italian woman from southern Puglia in the Rome airport. And thus began a long time love affair with Salento, the tip of the heel of Italy’s boot, that led to friendship with two more Salento school teachers. In 2006, Audrey and her husband David, a lawyer turned artist, along with their three Italian friends, began a collaborative writing project that has culminated in the publishing of the book, Salento By 5: five authors, five different views of a relatively unknown part of Italy so far to the east that it is often left off the map. Audrey has always been intrigued by the untold stories of people who live differently in the world. (more…)

David Hathwell just release a new book, Between Dog and Wolf. The French “entre chien et loup” describes those moments at twilight when the eye, no longer to be trusted, can’t distinguish between a dog and a wolf. The poems in David Hathwell’s new collection take place on the threshold—unsettling, often perilous—between light and darkness: between the familiar and the unknown, the expected and the unforeseen, safety and danger.

“Sharp and unsettling, the poems offer a sense of something just not right. An important book for times like these.”
—Erica Dawson

“An absolute delight to read. Commanding a beautiful lyricism, Hathwell ask us to consider the world in ways we likely haven’t before. Do yourself a favor and buy this book.”
—Rob Griffith

It’s interesting that the Wanderland Writers generally tend to head south in their explorations, and nowhere was the southerly route more rewarding than in Andalusia. On this latest adventure, workshop leaders Linda Watanabe McFerrin and Joanna Biggar led the writers on a search for the soul of Southern Spain. Along the way they discovered a country ripe with contradiction: an arid landscape filled with lush gardens; the practice of elaborate Christian rituals in churches echoing a rich Islamic past; a land of bullfighters, gypsies, poets, philosophers and scholars; a place where duende and alegrĂa coexist. As they spread out in this inviting territory, they encountered—and wrote about—Columbus and the Christian (more…)
