Writers, you won’t want to miss our next salon. You’ll have an opportunity to listen to and ask questions of legendary editor and publisher, Jack Shoemaker who, through his respected imprints, has introduced authors like Annie Lamott to the reading public and shepherded them to success. Today, Jack is the co-founder, editor and publisher of Counterpoint Press.

COUNTERPOINT LLC was created in 2007 through the acquisition of three notable independent presses: Counterpoint, Shoemaker & Hoard, and Soft Skull Press. In January 2008, the company began publishing two imprints, Counterpoint and Soft Skull Press. Shoemaker & Hoard titles are now being published under the Counterpoint imprint.

Author-driven, they devote all energy to the fresh, cutting-edge, and literary voices of their authors. The genres they cover are vast—fiction and nonfiction, poetry, graphic novels, and anthologies, all of which collectively focus on current affairs and politics, counterculture, music, history, memoir, literary biography, religion, and philosophy.

The company’s office is in Berkeley, California.

Counterpoint books are distributed by Publishers Group West, a division of the Perseus Books Group.

Jack Shoemaker was born in California in 1946, and came of age working as a bookseller at a time of political and literary revolution on the West Coast. He has been co-founder, editor, and publisher of three major independent imprints, North Point Press, Counterpoint, and his current house, Shoemaker & Hoard. The list of titles published by Shoemaker traces the careers of several contemporary masters, often from an author’s first book to his last.
