This time we have a full panel of speakers coming to teach you about self-publishing.  They’ll be sharing their expertise in all areas of writing, publishing, design, distribution and marketing with you. If you are thinking about publication, either with a traditional publisher or as an independent, you won’t want to miss out on the wealth of information offered here. It will save you from making many of the blunders that plague novice authors and mark them as amateurs. There’ll also be plenty of time to answer your particular questions.

The panelists are:

  • Jim Shubin, Book Design
  • Lowry McFerrin, Publication and Print
  • Phil Cousineau, Writing and Marketing
  • Bill Petrocelli, Book Sales and Distribution

Our Panelists:

Jim Shubin—also known as “The Book Alchemist,” Publisher, Graphic Designer, and Travel Photographer—has been designing and producing custom travel and other books since 2005. He has also taught college-level design and photography, and is the owner and principal at an advertising design studio. Jim honed his design skills at such advertising greats as Ogilvy?& Mather, Grey Advertising, Saatchi & Saatchi, and J. Walter Thompson, with large and small clients from California to Australia, New Zealand, and even New York City. Lowry McFerrin learned to love the smell of printers ink as a teenager while working in his family-owned, San Francisco-based lithography company. He has spent over 30 years in the printing industry and has, in addition to his production management, estimating and purchasing expertise, managed almost every kind of print project from business cards and bar codes to full-color brochures and books.
Before starting up ProForma Mactec Solutions, Lowry served as Vice-President of Distributor Sales and Service for a privately-held barcode and tape seal product manufacturer and was a member of its Board of Directors.
He now serves as President/CEO of ProForma Mactec Solutions, a provider of printing and promotional products and services. With his decades of experience, he has helped produce books as well as providing print media to publishers like Lonely Planet Press, Travelers’ Tales, Hunter House Books, Birdcage Books and Left Coast Writers.

Phil Cousineau is an award-winning writer and filmmaker, teacher and editor, lecturer and travel leader, storyteller and TV host. His fascination with the art, literature, and history of culture has taken him from Michigan to Marrakesh, Iceland to the Amazon, in a worldwide search for what the ancients called the “soul of the world.” He has more than 25 books and 15 scriptwriting credits to his name; the “omnipresent influence of myth in modern life” is a thread that runs through all of his work. His books include Stoking the Creative Fires, Once and Future Myths, The Art of Pilgrimage, The Olympic Odyssey, The Hero’s Journey, Wordcatcher, The Painted Word, and more.

William Petrocelli is an author, a bookseller, and a former attorney.
He spent a few years as a Deputy Attorney General for the State of California and then as a poverty lawyer in Oakland, California, before going into private practice.
For the past thirty years or so he has been the co-owner with his wife Elaine of Book Passage, a retail bookstore in San Francisco and Corte Madera, California.
Bill is the author of Low Profile: How to Avoid the Privacy Invaders (McGraw Hill) and co-author of Sexual Harassment on the Job: What it is and How to Stop it (Nolo Press). He is also the author of the forthcoming novel Women For Peace.
